SEO vs AEO vs GEO vs AIO: What They Mean and What Actually Works (2026)

SEO improves discovery in search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) focuses on direct answers, while GEO (generative engine optimization) focuses on visibility and citations in AI-generated responses. AIO can mean AI Overview optimization or AI optimization more broadly. These goals share foundations: accessible pages, useful answers and credible evidence. Geographic targeting is different from GEO and describes where your customers are.

What do SEO, AEO, GEO and AIO actually mean?

The terms describe different ways a person might find and use information. SEO is the broad discipline of making a site discoverable, understandable and useful in search. AEO emphasizes the answer to a question. GEO emphasizes whether a source appears inside a generated response. These goals overlap because an assistant still needs information to retrieve before it can cite a source.

Geographic SEO addresses the places a business actually serves. GEO in this guide means generative engine optimization, not geolocation. A Nigeria-based provider can explain remote service coverage for international buyers without claiming overseas offices. Useful geographic detail answers practical questions about time zones, payment, communication and the customer locations that affect a project.

What does Google officially say about AI optimization?

Google explains that its generative AI Search features are rooted in core ranking and quality systems. Retrieval-augmented generation, also called grounding, retrieves relevant information from the Search index and uses it to support a generated response. A page must therefore be accessible and useful as a source; making a claim in marketing copy does not give it a place in an answer.

Query fan-out means a model can issue related searches concurrently to explore aspects of a question. It does not mean a business should produce one page for every imagined variation. Google specifically warns against scaled pages created primarily to manipulate search or AI responses. An expert explanation can address several relevant questions on one page without becoming a collection of thin keyword destinations.

From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. Its emphasis on non-commodity content means material that contributes something useful rather than repackaging common advice. First-hand experience, original explanation and evidence from real work can make a page worth retrieving. That is a direction for content quality, not permission to invent a personal story or assume firsthand work automatically earns a citation.

What does the GEO research say about getting cited?

Aggarwal and colleagues introduced GEO and GEO-bench in research published at KDD 2024. The benchmark contains about 10,000 queries across several domains. Their experiments reported up to about 40 percent improvement in the paper’s visibility measure for some content-editing strategies. Adding relevant sources, statistics and quotations was among the approaches associated with improvements. Keyword stuffing did not emerge as an effective route to the headline gains.

Visibility was a research-defined measure of prominence in generated answers, not customer inquiries, search positions or revenue. Results varied by method and domain. The benchmark does not establish identical gains across current assistants or live searches in each product.

Do brand mentions matter more than backlinks?

Ahrefs analyzed 75,000 brands in an AI Overview study and reported a Spearman correlation of about 0.664 between branded web mentions and brand visibility, compared with about 0.218 for backlinks. These values describe relationships in that study’s selected data. They are not evidence that adding a mention causes a citation or that backlinks no longer have a role in discovery and broader search.

A later, separate Ahrefs analysis reported YouTube mentions at approximately 0.737 across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews. It is a different study from the 75,000-brand comparison. The figure is not a universal platform weight or a guarantee from posting a video.

Correlation is not causation. Well-known brands may have more mentions and greater existing visibility together. Earn genuine attention with useful explanations of actual work. Buying inauthentic mentions does not recreate the study conditions.

Which AI optimization myths should you ignore?

Google says Search ignores llms.txt for visibility and rankings. The proposed file is harmless as a supplementary content map and other systems may use it, but it is not a Google ranking shortcut. Its presence does not replace robots rules, crawlable pages or a sitemap. Google can still treat such a file as ordinary content; that is different from using it as optimization instructions.

You do not need to break every explanation into tiny chunks or rewrite useful content into an artificial AI style. Google can understand multiple topics on a page and surface relevant portions. Use direct answers, descriptive headings and readable sections because they serve people. Length should follow the question, not a rule that every answer must fit an arbitrary number of words.

Structured data can help eligibility for applicable rich results, but Google says no special schema is required for generative AI search. It should match visible content. Google also does not award review stars to a business for self-serving reviews it hosts about itself, including reviews supplied through third-party widgets. Keep authentic client feedback visible without inventing AggregateRating markup or expecting self-hosted business stars to appear.

How do ChatGPT, Copilot, Perplexity and Claude discover pages?

Allow the relevant search crawlers when public search discovery is your goal: OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, PerplexityBot for Perplexity and Claude-SearchBot for Anthropic search. Review Bingbot access for Bing-backed search and Copilot grounding. Robots access is one layer; a firewall or hosting rule can still block a permitted crawler. Follow each provider’s current documentation instead of assuming every request with a familiar name is legitimate.

Search crawlers and training crawlers are not interchangeable. OpenAI documents separate controls for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot. Anthropic likewise distinguishes search, user retrieval and training crawlers. Perplexity describes its search crawler as not collecting content for foundation-model training. Make the policy decision deliberately, and do not assume permitting search requires accepting every kind of automated use.

Copilot can draw on the Bing index. Bing Webmaster Tools, a valid sitemap and IndexNow notifications support discovery and freshness, without guaranteeing inclusion. Bing introduced AI Performance as a public preview in February 2026, showing citations across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated Bing summaries and selected partner integrations. Citation counts describe observed references, not a position in an answer or proof of authority. Access and reporting availability should be checked in the actual account.

Which technical basics still matter?

Start with public, crawlable HTML containing the key answer, heading and links. Server rendering helps make that information available without depending on a later interaction. Check successful page responses, descriptive titles and self-referencing canonical URLs. A sitemap lists intended public destinations, while internal links explain how those destinations relate. These signals should agree rather than sending crawlers to a homepage canonical for every service.

Google’s good Core Web Vitals thresholds are LCP at 2.5 seconds or less, INP at 200 milliseconds or less and CLS at 0.1 or less, assessed at the 75th percentile. They describe real-user experience thresholds. A single local screenshot or a development-server test cannot establish that a live site meets them for its users. Review field data where available and use laboratory tests to diagnose specific causes.

Reserve image dimensions, keep primary media appropriately sized and avoid layout changes from decorative animation. Use clean navigation and remove unnecessary scripts. Google’s spam policies prohibit doorway abuse and scaled content created to manipulate rankings. One useful remote-collaboration page is better than pretending to have an office in every country. A service inventory should follow distinct buyer needs, not every keyword variation a tool can suggest.

How can you measure AI visibility honestly?

Google announced Search Generative AI performance reports in June 2026 and stated that the rollout reached all websites worldwide by August 31, 2026. The announcement describes dedicated views with impressions and breakdowns such as pages, countries, dates and devices, while AI data also remains in overall performance reporting. Do not assume the announcement proves that every AI click, citation or ranking is available as a separate metric.

Bing AI Performance provides a different view, including citations, cited pages and sampled grounding queries in its public preview. These reports are not interchangeable with Google’s. A citation is not necessarily a visit or a qualified inquiry. Compare like-for-like metrics.

If analytics are configured lawfully, referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com can help identify visits attributed to those sites. Referrer data may be missing and does not capture every answer that mentioned the business. This site has not added analytics as part of this pass. Monthly review should distinguish completed fixes, observed visibility and actual business conversations rather than combine them into a single unsupported success number.

What is my approach to SEO, AEO and GEO?

I fix technical issues first so that useful content can be discovered and read. Then I build one strong page per distinct service, with an answer, specific scope and credible evidence. I ask what the business knows from real work that a generic article cannot contribute. Names can remain confidential while the explanation stays precise about the task and the decision.

I use actual reviews as evidence of the working relationship, not invented outcomes. A strategy deliverable is not proof of a traffic increase. Content approvals and client permission come first.

For off-site visibility I favor useful YouTube explanations, thoughtful LinkedIn contributions and genuine community participation. I measure monthly with the reports available to the business and use the observations to adjust the plan. No one can honestly guarantee rankings or AI citations. The 12-point checklist below is a working sequence for improvements I can deliver, not a promise that completing it forces a search engine to recommend you.

Common questions

Can GEO guarantee that ChatGPT cites my business?

No. Better access, clearer evidence and useful content can support discovery, but the assistant chooses what it retrieves and cites. No provider can honestly promise a citation for a particular question.

Does Google require llms.txt?

No. Google says Search ignores it for visibility and rankings. It can be maintained as a supplementary file for other systems without treating it as a requirement.

Should I publish a separate page for every AI query?

No. Publish genuinely distinct content for real needs. Scaled pages created primarily to manipulate search or AI answers can violate Google’s spam policies.

Do the research correlations prove YouTube causes citations?

No. The Ahrefs results are observational correlations from specific studies. They support investigating genuine brand visibility, not a guaranteed outcome from adding mentions.

What should I do first?

Check technical access and whether your service pages explain real work clearly. Then plan content only your business can contribute and measure changes consistently. Scope and quote are agreed before project work starts.
